Some people who usually take pain relievers such as advil are reported to be having tinnitus. They also said that after they had stop using this drug, their hearing came back to normal. Is it possible to have tinnitus from taking pain relievers?

Tinnitus is a condition commonly known as "ringing in the ears". The ringing sounds are brain-induced; that is, ringing is perceived in the absence of any external auditory stimulation. In addition to ringing sounds, roaring, hissing, clicking and other non-externally generated sounds are also classified as tinnitus. Chronic tinnitus can be caused by noise exposure, disease, excessive use of aspirin or other pain relievers, and use of certain antibiotics.
According to the American Tinnitus Association (ATA) it is estimated that approximately 50 million persons in the U.S. have intermittent or permanent tinnitus. Of these, approximately 10-12 million have severe and chronic tinnitus. The ATA reports that of these some two million persons are completely disabled by the condition. Severe tinnitus in some drastic cases has led to suicide.

I am not really sure on the veracity of this research or heard about this one, but some drugs do cause a whizzing sound or something related to that effect , but it will be gone as long as its effectiveness had already bee lapsed/over, that is what I had observed when i am going to take some cold medications.. edited by shiela on 2/21/2010

Nice research Pramod but that does not seem to answer Shiela's question. Does the ringing sound from tinnitus is like the sound of TV's ringing sound as well?

I think there are certain drugs that have adverse effects and side effects that can cause tinnitus. Taking drugs that are beyond the prescribe amount always have an effect to the body.

I totally agree with you tahopable. These said drugs always have effects in the body if mistakenly taken in excessive amounts. And one of this side effects maybe tinnitus.

I think what tahopable wants to say is that when certain drugs reached the toxic level of the drug this might be the cause of tinitus. Toxic level means when the amount of the drugs on the blood is beyond the normal already. This is the reason why people needs to secure a prescribed dose by a physician.

That's clearer. Anyhow, I don't really think that drugs can cause tinnitus unless those drugs have some affect in our brain. Tinnitus is caused from a problem in our brain right, and not all drugs have an effect on it.

So those can inflame our ears? Well, many people take pain reliever medicines and not all of them develops tinnitus. Those who did probably has a weak immune system.

Tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom of some underlying condition. Symptom, meaning reported or observed by the patient. I do drug study back in college and some drugs I have encountered causes tinnitus. Drugs such as Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs and some antibiotics could contribute in the development of tinnitus.
