The Mainstream Center at Clarke has just published a new children’s kit to help teachers explain hearing loss to their students who have normal hearing. The new book Friends, Like You, written by Mainstream Consultant Melissa Griswold and illustrated by Cynthia Fisher, introduces readers to children with hearing loss who communicate by talking and who understand others by listening with their cochlear implant and hearing aids.

The 32-page book features Molly and Max, two students who like music, sports and school. Listening can be hard work and misunderstandings happen sometimes, but they don’t let their hearing loss stop them from making friends and having fun.

For both educators and families, Friends, Like You provides a way for children to discuss and understand hearing loss. It also explains assistive devices and provides tips on how to communicate with a person who has a hearing loss. Each book comes with an educator’s guide and a children’s activity/coloring book and retails for $24.95. For more information or to order a book, contact The Mainstream Center at Clarke at 413-582-1121 V/TTY or visit http://www.clarkeschool.org.

The Mainstream Center at Clarke is marking its 30th year of providing information and professional consulting services to families, schools and colleges who are educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students. They also present workshops throughout the year on such topics as the development of listening skills, oral transliterating, adjustment counseling and psychological testing.
