The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a new warning that cochlear implant patients make sure they get vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, a potentially deadly infection causing inflammation of the meninges, or lining of the brain.
Several years ago a meningitis scare nearly halted the miraculous forward march of cochlear implant technology, as researchers struggled to find the cause of a rash of meningitis cases among children who had received implants. It was determined that a small rubber wedge used by surgeons to position the electrodes in the cochlea most likely led to higher incidences of infection, including meningitis.
The positioner was only used with Advanced Bionics implants and the company quickly changed its surgical procedure so that the positioner was no longer needed. There still is some risk of meningitis infections, but it can be dramatically alleviated by ensuring patients are fully vaccinated.
The FDA issued the new warning after two cochlear implant patients died from infections. Neither was fully vaccinated, and one likely died because of the lack of vaccination, the FDA said. It also noted a survey of cochlear implanted children revealed nearly half did not know whether their children had been fully vaccinated. It is advising healthcare providers to ensure their patients have proper vaccinations.

I think this is absolutely ludicrous. How many vaccinations will the government try to cram down our throats only to allow the pharmaceutical industry to make their great profits. They're trying to desensitize us to the side-effects and make us worried (instill fear) that if we don't take the medicine, something bad will happen.

It make sense also I think...It seems vaccination is a common word of today's health issues!..I guess its on the foreign object / implants whose at fault here..especially if this device is not been sanitize or whatever procedure that must be done before the application or implanting it in our inner ear..

You've only cited one situation how a patient got an infection, through surgeons. But how about any patient who got infection because of the dirty foods they ate? Are there any that you know?

I don't think these pharmaceuticals only wants their profits. It only states that we should prevent any further damage by having these vaccinations. Prevention is always better than cure.

I don't think so... There are lots of civil and criminal cases now involving pharmaceutical companies mixing their drugs with other dangerous chemicals.

Yes I agree, there are lots of cases about these kind of anomalies. I assume that we should always check those vaccines before buying them. We should also consider the doctors orders before buying any medicines that would help us.

In fact, if you can, it would be better if you just fight your sickness through eating healthy foods instead of taking medicinal drugs. Herbs would be helpful as well.

Alternative medicine is widely adapted from all over the world now. There are supplements that can help and herbs that could fight of certain diseases.

These pharmaceutical drug companies are only targeting rich countries because they know many people there able to afford medicines they are going to offer unlike countries in the 3rd world and below.

These third world countries only depend on donations from any rich countries. That's why most of the time many medical missions are held or organized at these third world countries.

Oh, so that means even 3rd world countries get these kinds of medicines as well. Good info. I thought donations given were just money so that the countries being helped would be the ones who would take care of buying the medicines.
