I have posted a few times on this forum already actually regarding my feelings surrounding this controversy. I agree that the fact that I am deaf does not mean that I am broken. The fact that I am deaf does not make me a none productive or lesser person.
I have so many fears with these, including the dividing of the deaf community. Ultimately not everyone is a good candidate for the implant because an intact cochlear is needed. So some will remain forever in silence.
More over, what happens if the body rejects an implant? The user could have been reliant on it for all of their life and be suddenly left deaf without the option of hearing aids to help them as their cochlear has already been destroyed. You only get one shot at this each side.
I really have reservations, this post could get ranty so I will shut up.

If our body rejects the implant then I guess we still should not lose hope forever...I think they will still research and continue inventing another products that will help us..anyway as long as we know the sign languages then I think for the meantime it will suffice..my concern is what about if the this sign languages should be imposed by the government for us to learned so that we may be able to communicate to those who are deaf ? and they will not be left alone in the dark?

The controversy over cochlear implants in children has many sides. For some in the deaf community, CIs are an affront to their culture, which as they view it, is a minority threatened by the hearing majority. The deaf community feels that its way of life is fully functional, and that using American Sign Language instead of oral English gives them no disadvantage in society.

hey paulette, I like the idea of imposing this sign languages to our school curriculum, at least in this way we can still communicate easily with the hearing impaired brothers and sisters in the community.

Although because you, or other people like you, are deaf does not mean you're less productive, it only goes for you and not for everyone. And deafness can really make a person less productive sometimes.

Being hearing impaired does make use less productive at certain things. What if the job that is given to us are call center agents? Surely we can't hear people.

If you know your capacity why would accept a job that does not maximize your strengths?

Yeah but I think beavver is just making a point. And we do not really have to accept jobs that we can't do when we are hearing impaired and that is just another reason why some hearing impaired people are less productive.

I can't really say that disabled people are less productive than normal ones. I know some people who excel productively even if they are incapable of doing things. It only depends on what you do and what you're capable of.

Yeah that's correct. Let's all you need to do in a job is to wrap some things properly then you obviously don't need your sense of hearing in anyway right? So you're not that less productive in this job. It just depends on what you would take.
