My mom got hard of hearing as she hit her mid 50's. I'm 40 and find myself saying huh, a lot.

Absolutely runs in the family " title="Sad" /> The more hearing impaired relatives you have, the more likely you are to experience hearing related problems.
Guess you have to thank your family for that one...

I am turning into my father. He eventually got a hearing aid.
Frankly aside from some speech and some music, I prefer silence.

My mother-in-law is getting a little hard of hearing, but my father-in-law seems to not be so much.
Unfortunately, he's reluctant to turn up the TV to a comfortable listening level for her. So when we gave them a new TV, we suggested adding speakers that could be placed closer to her chair.
I think she's looking into a hearing aid, too.

My mom used to have the tv up so loud I couldn't stand to be in the same room. If she were still here I would suggest an aid just for watching tv. Just saying.

So in addition to the loss I had from the infection, I have to worry about this?

I really don't like the idea of tinnitus running in the family. I hope the geneticists can do something about things like this sooner. They're the one's who can only alter people's DNA. It does not really have that much effect now since there are now hearing aids for all of us to use though.

i think this is not inheritance. It is environmental defect.

alter? DNA?, is it possible? Interesting, I think when it terms to genetics it means it runs in the blood of the family way back to it roots.

Whether or not tinnitus is hereditary is actually not certain. It is wonderful to think that geneticists can do something about it but there none of them ever found any tinnitus gene present in anyone until now.

I think it is not inherited. You just thought of it as some of your relatives are having hearing difficulties. It might be because you live on the same place therefore the noise you hear are also the same. It is indeed more of an environmental. You have to be really observe how you listen to music or sounds or manage noise. There you might identify some risk factors. If the factors are modifiable then start modifying it immediately. edited by cindy on 2/23/2010

There are certain causes of hearing loss and tinnitus. I think some are hereditary causes and some are not.

You know this could also be from lack of immune system I guess. There are lots of people I know that have ear infection but none of them ever developed tinnitus in their ears.

You have a point there savvyeyty but I never heard a case on tinnitus because of a weak immune system. There certain causes but I think none of it is related to a weak immune system.

The thought of having a weak immune system may contribute to the causes of hearing loss. But I don't know about its occurrence. I also think that there are cases that it is hereditary.
