There are many viruses (and bacteria) that can cause hearing loss in different ways. Commonly meningitis has complications including deafness, and I personally lost my hearing when I had chicken pox and measles at the same time.

The virus that causes sudden deafness is not some strange, esoteric virus, but just the regular viruses that are around us like cold viruses, flu viruses, Chicken Pox (Varicella) viruses, etc. Normally they cause all the symptoms you know well, but sometimes, for whatever reason, they get into the inner ear and wreak havoc there resulting in sudden hearing loss and/or balance problems.

I think they mean like autoimmune viruses like Lupus or Aids, swabbing your ear out with alcohol will only help with bacterial infections and even still most bacterial infections of the ear happen in the middle ear past the eardrum where you cant get alcohol...... So cleaning your ears out is a good thing, but its not going to prevent viruses

My Aunt lost her hearing when she was 4. The doctor's told the family that it was a side effect of the chicken pox virus. Her parents said that it was due to her incredibly high fever. Now keep in mind that this was 50 years ago. I'd assume that this type of side effect is rare in this day and age. Medicine has come very far since then.

Yes there are. But not all of them are viruses that are directly infecting our hearing capabilities. Some of them just happen to spread in our ear and infect it.

There are certain viruses that can cause hearing loss. I think pheinbaugh2 have already mentioned one. Viruses are not the only one that can cause these hearing losses but there are other factors. Like physical and environmental factors.

I agree with the above posts. Another cause of hearing loss is the increase level of certain drugs on the blood level, termed as toxicity. When certain drugs reached the toxic level this causes hearing loss. Therefore be sure to take any medication according to your physician's order.

One thing that can cause it is inflammation to our ears. It can be to our ear canals or just out side the or even in the main place of our eardrums.
